6th Grade Overview
Welcome to sixth grade and Middle School! In all disciplines, sixth grade students consider their religious theme “God Calls a People – The Old Testament.” Students participate in a Seder meal to enrich their understanding of our Church history. They study how humans interact with their environment through work, art, recreation, and thought. By studying and comparing various ancient civilizations in social studies, students develop a frame of reference to understand and appreciate cultural differences. The Greek Festival is a cross-curricular event which involves dressing in character, performing Greek plays, creating ancient toys in art, and feasting like a king!
7th Grade Overview
Seventh graders explore the religious theme “Jesus the Way, the Truth, and the Life." As they grow in their knowledge of Jesus, they learn to love and serve with greater compassion. In their integrated curriculum, students are encouraged to become more reflective as they consider their readings, writings, class discussions, and projects. Developmentally, they are ready to read more abstract texts with complex concepts, to take notes as part of study, to use resources, and to wrestle with questions and question the answers. As young teens, they spend time developing an environment of trust, respect, and fun as their bonds of friendship grow stronger and more accepting. Out of uniform days, dances, and special privileges are suddenly some of the most exciting school occurrences! They will end their year with The Passing of the Torch Ceremony, a rite of passage as they are hailed the future 8th grade leaders of our school.
8th Grade Overview
Eighth graders return in the fall as the leaders of school, ready to embrace the rigorous St. Jude curricula for one final year. Most have been together since kindergarten when wearing blue athletic shoes identified them as someone to guard and guide. They continue to be sheltered, but are now guided down a new path of analyzing their past and dreaming of what their future may hold. They reflect on such topics as the civil rights movement and its effects on today’s social issues; they recall Mad Minutes and how it prepared them for solving and graphing linear equations; and they remember the beauty of the metamorphous of the caterpillar when in first grade compared to the eighth grade thrill of the frog dissection.
Their religion theme “The Church Then and Now” continues to guide them as they review and learn about Church History and move forward with excitement to their futures with a solid foundation centered in Christ. In spring, they present the Living Stations of the Cross for the community, with a realization that the years of Saint Jude School “Nurturing the Formation of Saints and Scholars” is coming to a close.
