3-5 Curriculum

3rd Grade Overview

Third graders, ready to explore beyond their immediate environment, experience a year filled with exciting adventures.  Beginning with their religion focus of “Christ Our Life - We Believe,” the students explore their faith beliefs and focus on the saints.  Students pick a favorite saint to research and write a report, make a saint doll in art class, and dress like their saint for our All Saints Mass. As they travel on, they learn of many famous artists and then represent them at the Metropolitan Museum of St. Jude. Here you will encounter students as Picasso, Renoir, Monet, and many others, dressed in period clothing and sharing autobiographical information.  Third grade would not be complete without chocolate…... as in reading The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling followed by a decadent chocolate party on Fat Tuesday.  Research, role-playing and projects provide opportunities for different learning styles. As the third grader grows and develops as a member of the world community, he/she learns the need for respect, tolerance, empathy, and cooperation, all of which are important attributes to becoming a constructive member of the classroom and school community.

4th Grade Overview

Fourth grade is a year filled with engaging and exciting studies.  Lead by their religion theme, “God Guides Us - The Ten Commandments and Beatitudes,” their experiences throughout the year guide them to become independent thinkers and leaders, yet still learning how to accept and respect the differences of others.  The thrill of the Battle of the Books motivates constant reading, while the Invention Convention brings out their most creative ideas for changing the world.

5th Grade Overview

The fifth grade curriculum challenges the students to become independent learners as they gain autonomy over their academic life.  With a strong emphasis on critical thinking, study skills, cooperative learning, and time management, the students are provided with opportunities to meet these objectives in all discipline areas. Their Catholic faith content focus, “We Worship - The Liturgy of the Mass” engages the students to reflect on the sacraments, the center of Christian life. At the end of fifth grade, the students are prepared with the academic and social skills necessary for continued growth and success in Middle School. Their greatest excitement is saying “Bye-Bye Baby Uniforms” as the rite of passage to Middle School brings skirts, khakis and Top Siders shoes!
